What the sequencing sees — and why balance matters

Balance is the whole story

A healthy gut runs on a balance between keystone microbes that protect it and opportunists that, in excess, work against it. It is rarely one bug — it is the pattern, the ratios, and what that community is producing. Here is what we look for, and why each side tips the balance.

A large group of spore-forming bacteria that expand when the gut loses its protective acidity and its beneficial competitors thin out.

Propionic acid (PPA)p-CresolClostridial toxins

Why it matters: In excess, clostridia flood the gut with propionic acid and exotoxins. Animal and human research links elevated propionate to GI distress and autism-like behaviors — making clostridial overgrowth a priority to correct.

BlautiaOften too high

Usually a quiet fermenter — but specific strains (Blautia hydrogenotrophica) are among the gut’s most prolific p-cresol producers.

p-Cresolp-Cresyl sulfate

Why it matters: p-Cresol runs high in many children with autism and tracks with symptom severity. When Blautia dominates, it can push that metabolite the wrong way.

ProteobacteriaOften too high

A phylum that includes E. coli, Klebsiella and other Enterobacteria. A bloom here is one of the clearest microbial signatures of dysbiosis.

LPS / endotoxinInflammation

Why it matters: Their outer walls carry LPS (endotoxin). As the barrier weakens, LPS slips into circulation and drives inflammation — a core “leaky gut” mechanism.

BacteroidesRatio matters

A major, normally helpful genus that handles fiber, bile and sulfur. Here the ratio and direction matter more than presence alone.

Why it matters: Overrepresentation alongside low diversity can shift bile-acid and sulfur metabolism and crowd out the keystone species that keep the gut calm.

PrevotellaRatio matters

A fiber-fermenter that signals health in a diverse gut — but is telling when it dominates a low-diversity community.

Why it matters: When Prevotella overgrows amid depleted keystones, gas, fermentation and mucin turnover can shift in ways that feed discomfort and imbalance.

Why it matters: By making acetate and lactate it acidifies the colon — suppressing opportunists like Proteobacteria — and cross-feeds the butyrate producers downstream. Low levels remove that first line of defense.

A classic acid-producer that supports the gut lining and helps train a balanced immune response.

Lactic acidBarrier support

Why it matters: Its lactic acid keeps the environment acidic and inhospitable to opportunists, and it helps maintain the tight junctions that hold the barrier together.

Faecalibacterium prausnitziiOften too low · butyrate

One of the gut’s most important butyrate producers and a headline marker of a healthy, anti-inflammatory gut.

ButyrateAnti-inflammatory

Why it matters: Butyrate is the primary fuel for the cells lining your colon and a powerful anti-inflammatory signal. When it falls, the lining is under-fueled and inflammation rises.

The mucus-layer guardian. It lives in the gut’s mucus and, paradoxically, keeps that protective layer thick and healthy.

Mucus turnoverBarrier integrity

Why it matters: A robust mucus layer keeps microbes and toxins at arm’s length. Low Akkermansia means a thinner barrier — the setup for “leaky gut” and the inflammation that follows.

Grounded in a growing body of science

The patterns we look for aren’t arbitrary — they reflect what peer-reviewed research keeps finding in the autism microbiome. A few examples:

Propionic acid & behavior

Elevated propionate — a clostridial metabolite — induces autism-like behavior in animal models, and excess fecal propionate has been reported in children with autism and GI symptoms, correlating with more severe behaviors.

Children with autism show high fecal and urinary p-cresol and p-cresyl sulfate — metabolites made by organisms such as Blautia hydrogenotrophica and clostridia — with early exposure linked to symptom severity.

Bifidobacterium is consistently lower in autism, and butyrate-producers like Faecalibacterium are depleted — reducing the anti-inflammatory fuel the gut lining depends on.

Is Gut Balancing right for you?

A few things to know so you can decide with clear expectations.

Practitioner-guided. You’ll need a provider to review the data and sign off — this is not a self-directed protocol.

Best for moderate-to-severe presentations. If symptoms are mild, we may suggest other starting points first.

Affordable testing. The stool test is designed to be accessible; there may be a short waitlist during periods of high demand.

Your data stays yours. You receive your sequencing results, and the interpretation is yours to use with your practitioner.
